personal touches for the perfect party…

There is plenty to do when planning a party… a lot of our customers who host parties out of their home, in a restaurant or bar for example, are always looking for new ideas to add that personal touch to their party when in a public space. While your venue can set the tone of your event to a certain extent, these extra touches will tie in your party theme, colors and add a little pop of ‘you’ to the room!

DRINK COASTERS are a great way to bring some color to the table, and are also a subtle way to reserve tables if you are in a bar setting that doesn’t have a separate room for your guests. You can use a couple of different designs to mix it up or include funny sayings or trivia questions to add a little interest as well!

PERSONALIZED MENUS are another great way to add a personal touch to your party. If you have a set menu for the meal or fun cocktails named for the guest/s of honor that need their own drink menu, The Notes Nest can design and print custom menus in a number of sizes. You can use extra space on the menu to include photos of the guest of honor, funny stories or other sentiments.TheNotesNest_CustomCards

CUSTOMIZED CARDS can be placed in flower arrangements, on tables or party favors. This is example is actually from a customer who used an evite for a 40th birthday celebration dinner party at a high-end restaurant. She was looking for a subtle but classy way to make the table a little more special for the guest of honor. The Notes Nest came up with these cards based on the “Fab 40” evite design and were used on flower vases and party favors. (We ended up printing the guest of honor matching thank you notes, too!)

FOOD STATION CARDS can be printed with a matching font, color scheme and design to your party invitation. These of course have the bonus of being functional in letting your guests know what exactly is in front of them when you set out appetizers or have a buffet-style table. (How many times have you been to a party and hesitated to put something on your plate because you just weren’t sure what it was!?)

COLOR-COORDINATED M&M’S … Yes, we know, this has nothing to do with design or printing on card stock – but really, setting out a bowl of M&M’s that are color coordinated to your party theme will make everyone happy. Who doesn’t love a handful of M&M’s?! While it used to be a task, it is now actually pretty easy to find a store that carries a variety of colors that you can purchased individually. You can even order M&M’s with messages printed on them, such as a couple’s name or an announcement like “It’s a boy!” Take it an extra step and have someone’s FACE printed on the M&M… not sure how we feel about eating someone’s face on an M&M, but we’ll leave that up to you! (See www.mymms.com to learn more.)

We hope these tips help you add that personal touch to your next party. The Notes Nest takes custom orders for all sorts of projects all of the time, if you have an idea you’d like to try for your next party, drop us a line or fill out our custom project form to get the conversation started!

“I received the invites and thank you notes today and I am so happy with how they turned out. You did a wonderful job and I am so happy I ordered from your company. I plan to definitely use your services again and would highly recommend your company to others. Even the packaging added such a lovely, personal touch. Thanks again!!"

Sure, you can shop other places online where you click ‘add to cart’ and you are done, never interacting with a person. With each new customer, it is as if our family grows… we love getting to know each and everyone of you and are thrilled when you return for your next order. From weddings, shower invites, baby announcements, birthday invites, thank you notes to holiday cards… The Notes Nest enjoys sharing in each of these life events with you!

pancakes & pajamas party!

The last time we posted about unique birthday party theme ideas back in September (see post!), we knew we had this one coming up in January, but didn’t want to spoil this mom’s fun of her secret creative theme! So, now that this party has passed we can share with you PANCAKES & PAJAMAS!

PancakesPajamas

The first thing we love about this party is that it takes place in the morning. Even though we love going to birthday parties every weekend (right?!), it is nice to have one first thing in the morning so that you can still have the rest of the day available!

Guests (and parents!) were asked to come to the party dressed in their favorite pajamas. Guests arrived to see a wonderful spread of breakfast foods, complete with pancakes, of course! In addition to the invitation, The Notes Nest also designed and printed party favor stickers to go on treat bags that contained ‘eggs & bacon’ along with m&m’s. The ‘eggs & bacon’ was simply white chocolate melted with a yellow m&m (egg) and pretzel sticks (bacon). Easy and delicious, you can find the recipe right where it was discovered, on Pinterest… click here to get the eggs & bacon candy recipe! (While your at it, follow us on Pinterest!)

We had fun putting together this unique party invitation theme and look forward to the next one that you bring us!

a worthwhile new year’s resolution

If you are looking for a resolution that will positively impact both yourself and others, why don’t you Up Your Gratitude? This article, based on the book “A Simple Act of Gratitude” written by John Kralik, was published in Parade Magazine yesterday (Sunday, January 1, 2012). We may be a little biased, but a handwritten thank you note can really make such an amazing difference in someone’s day. Who deserves a thank you in your life?  … Happy New Year!

Up Your Gratitude  by John Kralik

“Knowing that you had to work on Thanksgiving of all days, I thought I’d express my gratitude that you have taken the time and made the effort to learn my name and greet me each day in a way that makes me feel like a person instead of a number. It’s a small thing, but on any given day, it can make all the difference. Thank you!”

About three years ago, I gave a card with these words to a Starbucks barista named Kimber. When I went in the next day, she told me, nearly breaking down, that my note made her realize what she did really counts. It was my 260th thank-you of 2008, the year I vowed to send one to a different person every day. I succeeded—though it took more than 365 days.

I embarked on the endeavor at a time when I felt anything but thankful. On New Year’s Day 2008, I went for a hike, feeling at an all-time low. I was overweight. I owned a law practice, but it was losing money. Entangled in a divorce, I lived in a depressing apartment. The woman I’d been dating had recently ended our relationship.

On my hike, I heard a voice. It said I shouldn’t focus on what I wanted or had lost but should be grateful for what I had. The idea of a year of thank-yous popped into my head.

This project transformed my life. I saw how much I had been blessed by so many people in different ways, and acknowledging their blessings seemed to make them multiply. After I thanked colleagues for directing cases to me, they referred more. When I expressed gratitude to clients for paying promptly, they began doing so even more quickly.

Something more subtle occurred, too. With my thank-you notes, I was trying to tell people how much their kindness meant to me. As they responded, that same message was reflected back.

In 2010, I put out a book about my year of thank-yous, “A Simple Act of Gratitude” (now in paperback). A few days after its release, I got my first thank-you from a reader. The next week, I received a few more, and then my publisher sent a whole box. My readers showed me how the effects of gratitude continued to ripple out. A nursing home patient who was paralyzed on her right side said she was grateful to be born left-handed and had written notes to the staff. One woman went in person to deliver her message to a former teacher, who read it and wept—she’d been working for 23 years and no one had ever thanked her.

My circumstances have improved immeasurably since that hike. I’m now in great shape—I ran a marathon to benefit leukemia research in part to thank an employee, and then completed two more. I found a small but lovely house, and I was appointed to my dream job, Superior Court judge. Having written my 860th note, I can say I keep learning that gratitude is a path to the peace we all seek.

Recently, a friend whose support led me to write my book passed away. On my desk is a thank-you from him, and I pray that the heartfelt note I’d sent to him did not go unread. At sad times like these, I return to the practice that turned my life around. I sit and think about the people to whom I owe so much. Then I take out my pen and write.

WRITE YOUR OWN: FOUR SIMPLE STEPS

GRAB A PEN AND PAPER.
Refrain from sending an email. Handwritten notes feel special, almost like the person is there with you. I use plain off-white cards that have my name printed on the front and my name and address on the envelope.

BE SPECIFIC.
Perhaps start by thanking the people who just gave you holiday presents. Open with “Dear So-and-So,” identify the gift (“the red and white tie”), and say one sincere thing about why you like it (“It’s a perfect match for my blue suit”).

DIG INTO THE PAST.
After thanking your close friends and family, write to people who helped you at critical moments. I reached out to the doctor whose operation cured my pain, and to another doctor who told me I needed to stop drinking.

KEEP IT SHORT.
Your message doesn’t need to be long and eloquent—my cards are small, with room for only three or four sentences. By sticking to a few lines, you keep the focus on your thank-you and on the other person’s kindness.
